Three years ago, the Washington Capitals squared off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a clash of the titans in the NHL’s Winter Classic.  The organization was told by the NHL that by participating in the game they would in turn host the Winter Classic.  Fast forward, and finally, the dreams of the Capitals organization have come to fruition as Washington has been chosen to host the 2015 Winter Classic.  Owner Ted Leonsis has been a major supporter of the event that has grown since its creation in 2009.  Annually, the classic draws large crowds, and has become a major boost for the league.

Washington offers the NHL several possible locations ranging from RFK Stadium to FedEx Field to Nationals Park.  The game will be played on January 1, 2015, and several sources expect Leonsis to make the formal announcement Saturday.
