The Washington Redskins announced yesterday that they’ve hired former San Diego Chargers GM AJ Smith as a senior executive. Smith had been fired by San Diego this past December.

Smith spent nine seasons with San Diego, constructing five AFC West champions. However, the Bolts never reached the Super Bowl during Smith’s time in charge, and finished this past season with a 7-9 record that also led to the firing of head coach Norv Turner.

Though the Redskins have not announced Smith’s exact duties, Mark Maske of The Washington Post notes that Smith was spotted last month evaluating talent with Washington GM Bruce Allen. Smith’s son Kyle is currently a scout for the Redskins. Whatever Smith’s role is, head coach Mike Shanahan still has the final say on all football decisions.
